Merry fat men in red ho-ho-ho-ed with artificial cheer and reindeer galloped high, pulling sleigh-fulls of ribbon wrapped presents. Everywhere billboards declared ‘Merry Christmas,’ garish and reassuringly commercial. The city wrapped itself in fake cheer, all except here.
