Cutting thru the Country
“… to places where they lie in wait. No one believes us, so no one helps. We are alone, scared, and holding your Mum’s hand at night won’t keep you safe, not anymore, and it turns out that your Dad is afraid of the big bad wolf because the big bad wolf is a rabid killer.”
– Lauren Miller
This is the fourth of ten great albums or E.P.s I discovered this year, presented here in no particular order. I know Lauren would have loved this one.
‘Country,’ by Medium Build. I encountered this scraggly, baseball capped poet in a room at the top of Yes, Manchester. Simple, paired down, and so far from the rock cliche.
I imagine Lauren dreaming of someone cutting across the country like a Dick Hallorann braving the storm to reach the Overlook so she and Jake don’t have to face the darkness alone.
In Nick Carpenter’s own words, “You’re not alone, we’re not alone. Community is real and available. Life is lonely and weird and long and scary but also incredibly short, and the people we love die or change. So much of life makes us feel alone, but we’re really not.”
‘Country,’ is an album that leaves you feeling less alone.
Listen. You’ll feel all the better for it.
