In The Pale Moonlight

Pale Waves, Manchester Academy, Neighbourhood Festival 2024

Lauren had her own moment in the garden. No flowers bloomed, only an insipid moon in the purple bruise of a sky.

Gravity.

Gravity pulled her. She was way beyond over her head, and in so deep there was nothing else.

But she would have loved this album.

Again, in no particular order, the seventh of ten great albums or E.P.s I discovered last year.

‘Smitten,’ is exactly how anyone might feel about this album. Filled with soft and delicate melodies, this, in Heather Gracie-Baron’s own words, is dreamy, romantic and feminine, unapologetically so, and yet, the stories that run through the lyrics are yours and mine, maybe from another time, or another day, but ours all the same.

Pale Waves headlined the Neighbourhood Festival in Manchester last year. Academy 1 never sounded so good.
